Sigmund Freud (18561939) was the Austrian neurologist who
developed psychoanalysis. He used hypnosis and free association to
discover repressed events and emotions in patients, often of a sexual
nature. In 1900 he published The Interpretation of Dreams , laying out
the fundamental concepts of psychoanalytic treatment. Freud’s
theories initially met with hostility, but eventually flourished in modified
forms as a means of treating psychoses and neuroses. He is
considered one of the great creative minds of the modern age.
